Gearbox

Bericht door richp10 » 11 jun 2007, 19:21

Hi folks - i'm trying to change the gearbox oil, the engine is a 1924
Brons (I think its a 1DD).

The gearbox is (I'm sure my word is all wrong) rotary, in that the main body of the gearbox rotates when the engine is in gear.

There are two access bolts on opposite sides - and I had been
informaly advised by a DBA member that the gearbox should be filled so
that when these are horizontal, excess oil spills out. ie. the gearbox
should be half filled.

This seemed reasonable, but I have been surprised to find that almost
no oil has drained out (with holes vertical) - this may mean I'm doing
something wrong, or that there was simply almost no oil left in the
gearbox (worrying, but at least I'm doing something about it). I
pored in a pint of new oil but it didn't seem to be draining out of
the other side; is it possible that there are two 'sides' that need to
be filled independently? Should I be using some kind of flushing oil
first?

I am using Morris Lubricants AG 140 gear oil, recomended by them.

Many thanks for any advice.. (in English for me!)

Regards

Are you sure the orifices are 180 degrees adjacent? my brevo clutch has one to be positionned at the top to be filled with the other at approx 5 o'clock position until pouring out. The drum needs to refilled more often than you would expect. I check every 16 hours and top up with very thick oil the exact type of which I could look up if you want me to

Many thanks for this - I am back at the boat at the weekend and will check, this might be the answer I need. My memory is they are 180 degree, but maybe not.

I cannot find markings on the gearbox to know what kind it is. If I am still stuck I will take a photo.

Many thanks for the help

Richard
